ResinDek or concrete slab for a mezzanine?

Weight, lead time, rolling loads, AMR robots, cost: comparing ResinDek composite flooring and a concrete slab on an industrial mezzanine.

2 min read

Short answer

On an industrial mezzanine, a ResinDek floor weighs five to ten times less than a concrete slab, installs dry with no curing time and accepts pallet trucks, AGVs and AMRs depending on the version. Concrete remains relevant only for very high static loads or specific fire requirements.

Weight changes the whole structure

A 10 cm concrete slab weighs about 240 kg/m². A ResinDek MD panel weighs 16.6 kg/m². On a 1,000 m² mezzanine the difference exceeds 200 tonnes of dead load, which directly reduces beam and column sections and the foundations.

Time to commissioning

Concrete needs formwork, pouring and three to four weeks of curing before loading. ResinDek screws onto the steel deck or, as Xspan, directly onto the beams. A 1,000 m² mezzanine is floored in a few days.

Rolling loads and robots

ResinDek is designed for rolling loads: up to 3,360 kg per pallet truck for MAX and 2,275 kg for AGV/AMR. The flat surface and ESD finishes suit robots, whereas the flatness of a concrete slab depends on execution.

Changes and maintenance

A damaged panel is replaced locally. A cut-out for a conveyor or chute is made with a saw. On concrete, such work means heavy intervention and downtime.

When to keep concrete

Concrete remains preferable for very high concentrated static loads, or when regulations require fire resistance that ResinDek Xspan FR (ASTM E84 class A, Bfl-s1) does not cover. Otherwise composite is faster and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Is ResinDek moisture resistant?

All versions are MR50. The WR version is MR90 and withstands weather exposure up to 120 days during construction.

What is the warranty?

The manufacturer states ten years against delamination, subject to installation requirements.
